RetroStudio is a simulation game engine created by Retro Dev on October 18, 2020, then made public after testing sessions leading up to December 24, 2020. Although the menu is not based on actual older Roblox websites, RetroStudio lets players create their own game using a built-in 2013 Roblox Studio, the players may choose Early 2009 to Mid 2015 era for their games. The only effect of Eras on Studio is what kind of materials the developer can use.

RetroStudio's prequel is RETROBLOX, which focused on replicating the Classic Roblox mechanics for games from 2009-2013.

Menu

When opening RetroStudio, the menu will feature two top bars with the game mechanics. In order below:

Top Bar

• Home (removed) - Similar to when Roblox still had a "Welcome, [user]" page. Shows some stuff about what's going on. Deprecated 2023, mostly moved to the Profiles page.
• Games - This is where you would find games and the different page categories to choose from. The loading limit is 3 pages per minute.
• Catalog - Here you can buy avatar items with Retrobux.
• Avatar - Customize your avatar with items you bought in the Catalog.
• Build - Shows games you've created; allows you to configure and test your games.
• Retrobux - The game's currency. The Robux-to-Retrobux exchange rate is 1:10 or 1:12 depending on the deal purchased.
• Event - An additional category with limited-time events and rewards.

Menu bar

• Profiles - When a player ID is entered, it shows their games, statistics, badges, and avatar.
• Messages (removed) - You could message players and get messaged back. Deprecated at the end of 2024 due to Roblox updates.
• Promo Codes - Occasionally a code will be released which will either grant retrobux, a limited item, a prank, etc.
• Rules - RetroStudio rules to abide by for gamers and developers. 12 rules and ROBLOX ToS.
• Settings - Change the main menu theme, in-game settings, and the appearance of Studio.
• Contests - Contests are usually building events. If there is an ongoing contest, a blog will appear here. Contest winners get prizes.

Time periods

Time periods make RetroStudio unique for the fact it can change the appearance and behavior of each game. 17 of the 20 time periods ever created are still accessible, ranging from January 1, 2009 to August 31, 2015. For more information, see the articles for these time periods in this category.

Incidents

December 2021 Shutdown Incident

On December 13, 2021, RetroStudio went under review for unknown reasons. Access was restored shortly.

May 2022 Shutdown Incident

• May 8: Twitter and Trusted RetroStudio user "crazyblocks234" said: "there was a user who joined a game that a friend of mine made and was saying that he was going to make Retrostudio "go under review" and also said that he knew an admin."
• May 24: The game is closed. Redirect brings a teleport error.
• May 26: Crazyblocks: "We are working towards a solution regarding RETROSTUDIO. Thank you for your patience thus far."
• May 27: Cristiano clarifies the game was not shut down by copyright or inappropriate content.
• May 28: Crazyblocks specified it was not because of the user he mentioned on the 8th, nor was it a major update project. It would also take time to reopen due to the game closed on Roblox's behalf.
• June 1: Game is reopened.

June 2023 Shutdown Incident

• June 28: User Beyond_5D found a backdoor in RetroStudio which let him terrorize the front page. RetroStudio was privated in a hurry. It returned in several hours.
• June 29:
• Morning: Another user BT45 (there is no link between BT45 and Beyond_5D that is aware of) raided Retro Dev to announce he would use the same backdoor to overwrite games. Some reports in overwritten games saw maps of the original World Trade Center. Once again, RetroStudio was privated. It returned in two hours.
• 7-8 PM ET: Numerous times the game would close for several seconds.
• 8:08 PM ET: While having a game "RetroStudio is back party", another anonymous hacker inserted decals of Mario, later used by developers for trolling. While information is unclear, this likely resulted in the third shutdown.
• 9:00 PM ET: RetroStudio reopened. Before that, it was titled "RetroStudio [be back soon [again [again]]]", and alike for "We're back!"

  

March 2025 Content Rating Loss

On around March 19th 2025, [Unknown time], RetroStudio lost its Content Maturity rating for a brief moment before returning on March 20th.

May 2025 NSFW Overwrite Incident

On the morning of the 20th of May, all front page games were turned into NSFW condos. RetroStudio was immediately closed. AyRay was hospitalized at the time which delayed response. Beyond_5D was immediately suspected but he said he was dealing with exams. The hacker remains unknown.

November 2025 publishing place incident

On November 4, 2025, a publishing place bug resulted in RetroStudio being taken down for four hours.

• A game called "RETROSTUDIO IS BACK PARTY" Reached over 150 Players at a time. [ID: 2657859576_57]
• RetroStudio was nominated for Builderman Award of Excellence 2022.
  • Cristiano and Ayray were offered VIP seats at the RDC 2022, but neither Crisitano or Ayray were able to attend due to Cristiano did not have a passport.^[1]
• The original badge “A True Badger 2025” got private because of the bug that everyone received without doing anything.^[2]
• RetroStudio has won the “Best Tech Design” award on The Creator Awards 2025.^[3]
• The text in Eggstravaganza 2009's Event icon is misspelled, as it's written Eggstravaganza, not Eggstravagansa.
